Background of the Study

Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder occurring during pregnancy, characterized by elevated blood pressure and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation. It poses significant risks to both maternal and fetal health, potentially leading to complications such as eclampsia, organ failure, and preterm birth. Effective management of preeclampsia is crucial to mitigate these risks.

Cardiac nurses, with their specialized knowledge in cardiovascular care, play a vital role in managing preeclampsia. Their responsibilities include monitoring cardiovascular status, administering antihypertensive medications, and providing patient education on lifestyle modifications to manage blood pressure. In regions like Yobe State, Nigeria, where healthcare resources are limited, the involvement of cardiac nurses in preeclampsia management is essential to improve maternal and fetal outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of cardiac nurses in managing preeclampsia, there is limited information on their level of involvement in Yobe State. Factors such as inadequate training, resource constraints, and high patient-to-nurse ratios may hinder their effective participation in preeclampsia management. Assessing the extent of cardiac nurses' involvement and identifying barriers they face are essential steps toward enhancing care for pregnant women with preeclampsia in this region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the extent of cardiac nurses' involvement in the management of preeclampsia among pregnant women in Yobe State.

2. To identify barriers that limit cardiac nurses' participation in preeclampsia management.

3. To assess the impact of cardiac nurses' involvement on maternal and fetal outcomes in cases of preeclampsia.

Research Questions

1. What is the current level of involvement of cardiac nurses in managing preeclampsia among pregnant women in Yobe State?

2. What barriers do cardiac nurses encounter that limit their participation in preeclampsia management?

3. How does the involvement of cardiac nurses affect maternal and fetal outcomes in preeclampsia cases?

Research Hypotheses

1. Cardiac nurses in Yobe State are significantly involved in the management of preeclampsia among pregnant women.

2. Barriers such as inadequate training and resource constraints limit cardiac nurses' participation in preeclampsia management.

3. Increased involvement of cardiac nurses in preeclampsia management leads to improved maternal and fetal outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on cardiac nurses working in healthcare facilities in Yobe State that provide maternity services. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and patient record reviews to assess the level of involvement and identify barriers. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data, variability in healthcare facility resources, and challenges in isolating the impact of cardiac nurses' involvement from other factors influencing patient outcomes.

Definitions of Terms
